A new era in optics and photonics is emerging in which naturally occurring materials used
to manage light can be augmented by man-made materials known as metamaterials. There
is the great promise of an increasing number of applications for these materials but they
require a deep understanding of the fundamental and often new physics involved,
especially at optical frequencies, and there is much to be done in advancing their modeling,
characterization and fabrication. Applications already proposed include slow light buffers,
superlenses and functional photonic materials. When the metamaterial’s structural
dimensions are very small compared to the wavelength of light, quantum effects are
important and photon-photon interactions are greatly enhanced.
The meeting covers all aspects of the applications of optical metamaterials as applied to
micro-optics to nano-optics and the propagation of light through structured periodic and
disordered photonic structures. The meeting encourages the presentation of new ideas and
concepts in modeling, fabrication and testing of optical metamaterials and their
exploitation in subwavelength optics, near-field optics, plasmonics, super-resolved imaging,
ultra-precise sensing, and diverse applications of metamaterials in biophotonics,
optoelectronics, energy and optical fibre and guided wave devices and systems.
The meeting is co-sponsored by the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the Chinese
Optical Society (COS), and it is organized by Nankai University (China).
Major topics include, but are not limited to:
♦ Applications of optical metamaterials in new optics and devices and fabrication methods
♦ Applications of optical metamaterials in fast and slow light
♦ Applications of optical metamaterials in biophotonics
♦ Optical metamaterials in optoelectronics and energy
♦ Optical fibre, devices and applications
